Our Design and Technology curriculum inspires pupils to become curious, creative and innovative thinkers who approach challenges like designers and engineers. Through a carefully condensed curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum (2014), pupils develop essential knowledge and skills across the key strands of Design, Make, Evaluate and Technical Knowledge.

Learning takes place through a range of areas including Structures, Mechanisms, Textiles, Cooking and Nutrition, Electrical Systems and the Digital World, helping pupils understand how design and technology shape the world around them. Design and Technology is taught in alternating half terms with Art and Design to allow focused learning while ensuring full curriculum coverage. A spiral curriculum revisits key knowledge and skills with increasing depth as pupils progress through the school. Each unit follows a design cycle in which pupils research, generate ideas, test and refine solutions to meet real-world needs. Lessons include opportunities to recall prior learning, engage with new concepts, practise practical skills and reflect on outcomes. Adaptive teaching strategies ensure all learners, including those with SEND, can access the curriculum. Through ongoing assessment, pupil voice and recorded design outcomes, we monitor progress and ensure pupils develop creativity, practical skills and critical thinking, enabling them to confidently explain their ideas and apply transferable technical skills beyond the classroom.
