French

At our school, we aim to inspire a love of languages by making French enjoyable, engaging and meaningful for every child. We want pupils to develop curiosity about the wider world and an appreciation of different cultures, while seeing language learning as both fun and valuable.

Through carefully planned, interactive lessons, children build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in French. They develop a secure foundation of vocabulary and simple grammar, learning to communicate using words, phrases and short sentences. A strong emphasis is placed on speaking and pronunciation, with regular opportunities to practise in a supportive environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process.

Lessons are taught through engaging topics and include songs, games, stories and a range of interactive activities to help make learning memorable. Key vocabulary and structures are revisited regularly to support retention and ensure steady progress as pupils move through Key Stage 2.

Alongside language skills, children explore aspects of French culture, including traditions and everyday life in French-speaking countries. By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils are confident, enthusiastic learners who are well prepared for further language study and have developed a positive attitude towards languages and global learning.
