Music

At Bletchingley, we aim to inspire a love of music and creativity by helping every child to see themselves as musicians. We want our pupils to experience music as an enjoyable, expressive, and inclusive part of their everyday learning, while encouraging them to develop the resilience and confidence needed for a lifelong enjoyment of music-making.

Through carefully planned, practical and creative lessons, children develop a secure understanding of key musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, and dynamics. They build confidence in performing, composing, and listening to music, making connections across a wide range of musical styles. Pupils are encouraged to engage with music actively through "genuine music-making," using their musical understanding to explore and appraise different works.

Our curriculum, supported by Surrey Arts Interactive and the Charanga platform, is designed to build knowledge and skills progressively, revisiting key concepts to deepen understanding over time. Lessons include a range of engaging approaches such as singing, improvising, and the use of music technology. These hands-on experiences, which include whole-class instrumental opportunities with percussion, recorder, or ukulele, help children to investigate music in an active and memorable way.

We also place importance on broadening pupils’ understanding of the world by exploring music from different cultures and traditions. By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils have a strong foundation in music, can perform and compose with increasing accuracy and control, and are equipped with the musical vocabulary and confidence to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.
