Physical Education

At Bletchingley Village Primary School, we believe that all young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. We aim to provide a positive experience of sport and physical activity from a young age to build a lifetime habit of participation. Our high-quality PE curriculum is designed to inspire children to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities and competitive sports.

Our curriculum supports general wellbeing by encouraging children to be physically active as an integral part of their daily school life. Through this approach, pupils become physically confident in ways that support their long-term health and fitness. Engaging in these activities helps to embed our school values of self-discipline and respect, while building essential life skills such as resilience, tenacity, and determination.

Our curriculum focuses on key areas that meet the specific needs of our children:

  • Swimming: As a lifesaving and life-enhancing skill, we provide a sequential programme starting in Year 3. Our goal is for all pupils to swim competently over at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue by the end of Key Stage 2.
  • Gymnastics: Working with a specialist gymnastics coach, children develop physical skills like core strength and coordination, alongside the emotional confidence gained through individual and group success.
  • Outdoor Learning: From Forest Schools to various outdoor learning opportunities, we believe being "specifically active" outdoors is key to developing an enduring healthy lifestyle.

We ensure a progressive journey of skill development supported by our subscription to PE Planning Limited. This journey begins in the Foundation Stage, where children master basic movements like running, jumping, and throwing. It continues through Key Stage 1, where they extend their agility, balance, and coordination, and into Key Stage 2, where they develop flexibility and strength while learning to evaluate and improve their own techniques.

Beyond weekly lessons, children participate in Sports Days and an annual ‘dance assembly’ to showcase their skills. By educating students about fitness, nutrition, and wellness, we empower them to make informed health choices that will endure well into the future.

Break time

During break times, there is plenty of time to take part in meaningful activity, be it den building, ball games, climbing wall or hide-and-seek.

Competitions

At Bletchingley Village Primary School, we are excited about the local schools being able to come together again for a competition. We love the challenge of competing and taking part! We join other local schools for District Sports, Rounders and Football competitions.

Extra-Curricular Clubs

At the end of the school day, there are a number of sporting clubs that run for KS1 and KS2, so they can continue the skills development. Football, Rugby Tots and Gymnastics run each week for all children.

Gymnastics

Our school is lucky enough to have outside support from “High Vaultage” coach, Chris Bower. Chris takes the children’s gymnastic abilities to new heights, with most children across the school achieving well above their expected skills. As they achieve things they didn’t think possible, the confidence that the children develop is amazing to see!

PE

At Bletchingley Village Primary School, the children learn the rules of different sporting games and activities whilst developing their control and tactics. Hockey, Basketball, Football, Rounders and Athletics are just some of the games that children are taught.

Sports Day

It wouldn’t be a Primary School without Sports Day! The children work together in a range of athletic, gymnastic and stamina based activities to earn Team Points. There is a carousel of events before the traditional running races- which the children (and parents!) all seem to enjoy.

Swimming

Did you know that drowning is the third largest cause of death in children under 16? Here at Bletchingley Village Primary School we understand that swimming isn’t just a skill – it is a lifesaving necessity. The children in the targeted year group will have lessons with a qualified swimming instructor until they meet the end of Key Stage expectations. These include swimming 25m, floating and treading water.
