Reading

At Bletchingley Village Primary School, we believe Reading is one of the most important skills we can teach to our children, as it is the gateway for every child to become a lifelong learner. For this reason, reading is a priority in all classes.

It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence in any subject, in order to prepare them for their forthcoming secondary education.

We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop:

  • Gain a life-long enjoyment of reading and books.
  • Read accurately and with understanding.
  • Apply a knowledge of structured synthetic phonics in order to decode unfamiliar words with increasing accuracy and speed.
  • Be able to read with expression, clarity and confidence.
  • Read and respond to a wide range of different types of texts.
  • Read fluently and with confidence, as this is a fundamental skill which opens up learning and impacts all areas of the curriculum.
