Headteacher Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been another busy and productive week at school, and I would like to share some of our recent highlights and reminders.

Little Wandle

The implementation of our Little Wandle phonics programme is going very well, and it has been wonderful to see the children's enthusiasm for reading continue to grow.

Children in Key Stage 1 brought home their reading books for the first time yesterday. Please remember that books need to be returned to school every Monday. Children will then bring home a new book on Wednesday each week.

Thank you for your support in helping your child develop a love of reading at home.

A Huge Thank You to Idong Pitt

We would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to Idong Pitt for her incredible fundraising effort.

Despite suffering a knee injury during the race, Idong showed remarkable determination and completed it in 4 hours and 50 minutes, running in challenging conditions with rain and slippery cobbles underfoot.

Thanks to her outstanding efforts and the generosity of everyone who supported her, she has raised over £1,400. With Gift Aid included, the total amount raised for the school is now just over £1,700. We are extremely grateful for this amazing contribution to our school community.

Surrey Special Educational Needs Ofsted Inspection

Surrey Special Educational Needs Services are currently undergoing an Ofsted inspection and inspectors would like to hear the views of parents, carers and children.

If you would like to contribute, please complete the survey using the link below:

https://ofsted.smartsurvey.co.uk/p/AreaSend/10436548

Your feedback is valuable and greatly appreciated.

Bikeability

Our Year 6 pupils have been enjoying Bikeability this week. They have been learning important road safety skills and developing their confidence when cycling.

We have been delighted to see their enthusiasm and commitment as they learn how to stay safe on the roads.

Parents' Forum

A reminder that our next Parents' Forum will take place on Wednesday at 9.30am in the school hall.

During the meeting, I will be sharing our key priorities for the year ahead and discussing our plans for continuing to provide the very best education for our children. All parents and carers are very welcome to attend.

Finally...

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing weekend.

Kind regards,

Denise Coady
Headteacher

Harvest Festival & Foodbank Collection

This year, we are delighted to be celebrating Harvest Festival in school with Father Paul on Thursday 15th October. The children will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of harvest, gratitude and generosity, while coming together to celebrate as a school community.

As part of our Harvest celebrations, we will be collecting donations for our local foodbank. Families are warmly invited to send in non-perishable food items, such as tins, packets, cereals and other long-life essentials. Every donation, however small, can make a difference to families in our local community. These should be sent to school by Wednesday 14th October.

The Harvest Festival will take place during the school day, with children across Years 1–6 taking part in the celebrations. Thank you for supporting our children to understand the importance of kindness, gratitude and helping others.

Safeguarding Update

As part of Keeping Children safe in Education, staff are trained in spotting the signs of online grooming. Being aware of this is also very important for parents, especially when children spend time on devices in their bedrooms and not supervised.

Online grooming happens when someone builds a fake trust or friendship with a child online to exploit, hurt, or manipulate them

Spotting the Signs

  • Secretive behavior: Hiding screens, switching apps when you walk by, or being overly private about online chats.
  • Behavioral shifts: Becoming withdrawn, anxious, clingy, aggressive, or losing interest in normal activities.
  • Unexplained items: Possessing new phones, clothes, or gifts you did not buy them.
  • Unusual device habits: Using smartphones or the internet late into the night.

How to Protect Your Child

  • Talk openly: Have regular, calm chats about their online friends, favorite games, and apps.
  • Set boundaries: Check privacy and geo-location settings together so they do not share their location or personal info accidentally.
  • Build trust: Make sure your child knows they can talk to you about anything without getting in trouble or being judged.

Where to Get Help and Report

  • CEOP: Report online abuse or grooming concerns to the National Crime Agency's CEOP Safety Centre.
  • NSPCC: Call the NSPCC Helpline for confidential advice and support regarding child safety.
  • Childline: Children can reach out directly to Childline for free and confidential support

Allergy Aware School

Allergy Aware School

We are committed to being an Allergy Aware School and keeping all children and adults with allergies as safe as possible. In line with Benedict’s Law, we have strengthened our allergy awareness, prevention and emergency procedures across school. Staff receive appropriate training and follow individual healthcare plans and agreed procedures.

In the event of a medical emergency or episode, trained staff will respond promptly and, where appropriate and authorised, administer prescribed emergency medication in accordance with the individual’s healthcare plan and school procedures.

Please inform the school promptly of any changes to allergies, medical conditions or medication. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
