Headteacher Update

This has been a busy week for our Year 6 pupils as they have been sitting their Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs). They have completed six tests in total, and we are incredibly proud of the resilience and maturity they have shown throughout the week. They have thoroughly earned their celebratory trip to the park today!

I can’t believe that next week marks the end of the first half of the Summer Term, and we will soon be heading into the final half term of the academic year. There is still plenty of curriculum content to cover during the second half of the term; however, it is also an important time for carefully planned transition activities to prepare the children for moving into their next class or, for our Year 6 pupils, the next stage of their education.

Next Friday, we will be holding a Sharing Afternoon at 2pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to come into school and spend some time in class with their children. We look forward to seeing you then.

Could I also remind everyone that scooters and bikes should not be ridden within the school grounds, for the safety of both riders and pedestrians. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in this matter.

Have a lovely weekend

Denise Coady

Safeguarding/ Online Update

Earlier this week I sent out on Arbor the new Trust Mobile Phone Policy . Please see below the rationale for the new policy below. This will mainly apply from September and will mainly affect year 5 and year 6 pupils who will not be able to bring a SMART Phone into school. Please read the full policy for more details.

From September 2026, our school will become a smartphone free environment for pupils. This reflects national guidance (DfE, 2024 and Jan 2026) and growing evidence that smartphones can distract children, affect wellbeing, and create safeguarding concerns in schools (UNESCO, 2023). The Department for Education (DfE) has published revised guidance on the pupil use of mobile phones in schools which comes alongside the government’s announcement that from April 2026, schools are ‘expected to be mobile phone-free environments.’ In addition, the DfE has launched a consultation aimed at mapping out next steps to ‘boost children’s wellbeing online’ and ensure they develop a ‘healthy relationship’ with smartphones and social media.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
