Headteacher Update

Year 6 have had some well-deserved down time this week with a trip to Chessington and Laser Tag, they were very lucky with the weather.

As you know, we held our Sports Day a couple of weeks ago. Thank you for all of your positive feedback regarding the change in dates. We decided to bring it forward to help ensure that the weather was not too hot for the children.

We appreciate that, for families with more than one child in the school, it can make for a long day. Therefore, we are already looking at ways to condense the schedule next year to make it easier and more convenient for parents.

The final results of the day were:

Green Team 847

Blue Team 818

Red Team 788

Yellow Team 737

I hope that you have a restful half term and we look forward to seeing you all back at school on Monday 1st June.

Punctuality - Every Minute of Learning Counts

As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, we are always looking to improve our attendance rate, as this is vital for a child’s education. Being punctual is also very important. If a child is late every day, it can lower their overall attendance levels and may mean they miss important learning opportunities at the start of the school day.

Please see below our school timings for Reception to Year 6

8.35am - Door Open

9am - Register is taken

9.01am - Your child has missed the beginning of the school day.

9.05am - 5 minutes late, 3 days lost over a year (Late mark)

9.10am - 10 minutes late, 6 days lost over a year (Late mark)

9.15am - 15 minutes late, 9 days lost over a year (Unauthorised)

Persistent lateness can also:

  • Cause embarrassment to the child
  • Make it harder for the child to settle
  • Cause disruption to the rest of the class

The school operates a First Day Response and will telephone families where children have failed to attend school in time for morning registration.

If you are having trouble getting your child to school and need some support, please reach out to a member of the Leadership Team or Mrs Brown our Pastoral Lead.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
