Headteacher Update

I would like to take this opportunity to say how proud we are of the resilience the children have shown throughout this week's hot weather. They have continued with their learning admirably and have followed all of the health and safety guidance that was shared during Monday's assembly.

I would also like to thank parents and carers for the support you have shown the school throughout the week. We greatly appreciate your understanding of the decisions we have made. These decisions were taken following the DfE guidance and after careful consideration of our school environment, including the extensive shaded areas available to our children. Throughout the week, our priority has been to make decisions that were in the best interests of the children.

It will certainly be interesting to see how schools adapt in the future as climate change contnues to bring more frequent periods of extreme weather. However, for now, it appears that temperatures are set to cool down, which I am sure will come as a welcome relief to everyone.

We would like to wish our Year 6 pupils the very best of luck for their transition days at secondary school next week. We are sure they will have a wonderful experience and look forward to hearing all about it when they return.

The Children's Commissioner is keen to gather pupil voice on a range of issues. If you would like your child to contribute their views, please visit the link below:

https://www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk/thebigfuture

Thank you once again for your continued support.

I hope you all have a restful and cooler weekend.

Safeguarding and Online Safety

Top Sun Safety Tips for Children

  • Avoid peak hours: Keep children out of direct sunlight between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, when UV rays are at their strongest.

  • Protect babies: Babies under 6 months old should be kept completely out of direct sunlight.

  • Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it generously 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours (or after swimming/sweating).

  • Cover up: Dress children in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers their arms and legs.

  • Hats and sunglasses: Provide a wide-brimmed sun hat to protect their face, ears, and neck, and use sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection for their eyes.

  • Hydration: Ensure they drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration and sunstroke.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school (absence without the agreement of the school or not covered by a medical note) and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

Just to remind parents/carers that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then the following will apply:

1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.

 3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.

Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.
